Alzey: Sights and City Walk

Experience the beautiful old town of Alzey during the compact city tour, which takes you along all important and interesting sights.

The starting point of the tour is only 2.5 km away from our Dorint Hotel Alzey/Worms. The address for the starting point is the parking lot at the Ostdeutsche Straße.

  1. The city walk begins at the old city wall of Alzey, the pigeon tower and the Georg-Scheu monument. The city wall was built in 1277, after Alzey received its town charter from Rudolf of Habsburg. At that time the city wall had a height of about 8.75 metres and 12 city towers, but today it appears much smaller. It is assumed that the area around the city wall was filled up by cultural rubble. A part of the city wall as well as the pigeon tower were restored, these are directly behind the Georg-Scheu monument. The name Scheu may seem familiar to you from the winery - Georg Scheu was a very famous winegrower in Alzey and his new grape varieties (Scheurebe, Huxel-, Faber- and Siegerrebe) are popular all over the world today.
Directly opposite the monument is one of the beautiful half-timbered houses of the Alzeyer old town, today it houses the wine bar "Weinzinken".

  2. The tour continues through the Amtgasse to the Small Church, which was built between 1728 and 1729. The church is kept in the simple and baroque style, entirely in accordance with the principles of Protestant church building. The famous Stumm organ-building family equipped the church with an organ in 1737.

  3. Continue along the street Am Wall to Schlossgasse where there are two sights - the Burggrafiat and the Städtische Weingut. The Burggrafiat, also in baroque style, was the seat of the Electoral Palatinate upper office Alzey. On the other hand, the Städtische Weingut was only established in 1850 and has all the typical styles of late classicism. However, the winery did not become the property of the town until the beginning of the 20th century.

  4. If you walk west on the Schlossgasse you come to Alzey Castle. The castle was probably built in the 13th century. It served as a starting point for the Rhineland Palatinate County and as a secondary residence of the upper office. Unfortunately, the castle was destroyed in the Palatinate Succession War and only rebuilt in the 20th century in the romantic style. Today the rooms of the castle house the district court and a boarding school.

  5. The tour now leads via Schillerplatz, Schießgraben and Stadthallenplatz to Sankt-Georgen-Straße, where there are several old half-timbered houses. For example, the "Haus Belmont" - the house with house number 19 - was built around 1700, but was completely destroyed in the War of Succession and later rebuilt.

  6. From the Sankt-Georgen-Straße turn into the Kirchgasse and you are finally at the Obermarkt with the Nikolaikirche. The market place is already for many centuries a popular place for markets as well as celebrations, at whose end the medieval Nikolaikirche is. The church tower, and thus the entire church, were completed in about 1499.

  7. Passing the Nikolaikirche and through the Schulgässchen one gets to the Hexenbleiche. This place is probably one of the most romantic in Alzey - there is still an intact part of the city wall and probably the oldest tower. The "Metzgerturm" is also affectionately called the "Hexenturm" because the artist Karlheinz Oswald placed the bronze figure of the "Little Witch" here.

  8. The former synagogue is located at the corner of Augustinerstraße and at the end of Löwengasse in an easterly direction. However, it was destroyed in the Second World War and today only the commemorative plaques commemorate the former church.

  9. The street opposite the synagogue, also called "Atzel", is one of the few streets in which there are still houses from before the war of succession. For example house number 3.

  10. From the "Atzel" one gets directly into the Spießgasse and thus the heart of the Alzeyer old town. The oldest house on this street dates from 1669 and still has the typical baroque gable.

  11. At the end of the Spießgasse is the fish market with the "Old Town Hall". Especially famous is the glockenspiel in the stair tower of the square. Playing times: daily at 10.00 o'clock, 12.05 o'clock, 14.00 o'clock, 16.00 o'clock, 18.00 o'clock and 20.00 o'clock.

  12. From the fish market to the west there is the Rossmarkt, whose name already reveals that horses were traded here. There is also the fountain of the horse market, created by the artist Gernot Rumpf.

  13. From the Rossmarkt to the Antoniterstraße in northern direction you come to the archway of the former Antoniterkloster. This arch is unfortunately today the only witness of the monastery culture in Alzey from the Middle Ages.

  14. Further north you reach the Alzey Museum. The museum was built in the old hospital building of the city and deals mainly with the historical past of the city.
