Nibelungen town Worms - only a stone's throw away from Alzey

Worms is a very popular destination for our guests in Alzey. The city constantly competes with the cities of Trier, Kempten and Augsburg for the title "Germany's oldest city". Worms is known above all as the city of the Nibelungs and Luther and for its cathedral, which is one of the three Romanesque imperial cathedrals in Germany.

Worms is about 30 km away from our beautiful Alzey.

The Nibelungs

Worms plays a very important role in the mythology and legends of the Nibelungs. Especially the written down scenes about Siegfried the Dragon Slayer often take place in Worms and so you can still see many remnants of the Nibelungs in the city on the Rhine today.

The Hagendenkmal, the Siegfriedsbrunnen and the Nibelungen tapestry in the Worms theatre are some of the most important monuments.

If you are particularly interested in the legends and stories of these heroes, you should visit the Nibelungen Museum in Worms.

Luther in Worms

He spent just 10 days in Worms, but in those 10 days Luther changed the world fundamentally. In the year 1521 he was summoned by the Reichstag in Worms and it was suggested to him that he should distance himself from his writings. However, Luther rejected this uncompromisingly. Luther referred to the Bible, and if it could not refute what he had written, he could not withdraw his point of view with a clear conscience.

Luther visited various sites in Worms, some of which you can still visit today. Some examples: the Magnuskirche, the historical Reichstag (today Heylshofpark), the Martinspforte, the Johanniterhof.

The Imperial Cathedral St. Peter

St. Peter's Cathedral is one of the most beautiful Romanesque church buildings and dates back to the early Christian era and the late Roman period. Many important historical events took place here: the papal election of Leo IX in 1048, the great Worms Concordat and, of course, the Imperial Diet before which Martin Luther had to answer.

The cathedral, as you can see it today, was built between 1130 and 1181 and is today a Catholic parish church in Worms.

If you would like to learn more about Worms Cathedral, we recommend that you take part in one of the public guided tours. Information on these can be found in the Tourist Info.
