Wine and Cuisine

Alzey is considered the "secret capital of Rheinhessen" and thus the capital of one of Germany's most famous wine-growing regions. It is not for nothing that some well-known winegrowers such as Georg Scheu, to whom we owe the Scheurebe among other things, come from Alzey. Even today, wine still plays one of the most important roles in Alzey.

The Municipal Winery in Alzey

The noble estate in the Schlossgasse was originally built in 1850. The estate was modelled on aristocratic palaces, and it has a typical courtyard of honour between the street and the building complex itself, as well as many typical classicist style works. It was not until 1916 that Dr. Adolf Seubert bequeathed the estate and the associated 90 acres of arable land and vineyards to the city. In the slopes of the Alzeyer Kapellenberg, the Alzeyer Rotenfels and the Alzeyer Römerberges are the vineyards of the winery. Not to forget the large Alzyer Sybillenstein vineyard.

Since the extensive renovations in the 90s, it has also been possible to get married in the winery.
Until 2012, the winery was one of the few that was completely run by the local authorities. Since this year the winery has been leased to the winegrowing families Becker & Metzler.

Weekly market

For all culinary lovers who appreciate good quality, the weekly market at the Obermarkt in Alzey is a must. Here you will find all the suppliers for your daily needs, from fruit and vegetable merchants to butchers and bakers. The most important thing, however, is that all products come from the region and are of very good quality.

The weekly market takes place every Saturday from 07.00 to 13.00 at the Obermarkt, Alzey.

The Alzeyer Wine Festival

For almost 100 years now, the Alzey Wine Festival has taken place once a year. Due to the unique atmosphere in the old town of Alzey paired with the funny and cheerful hustle and bustle of the festival as well as the fair lights, the festival soon became known across all borders and many guests from all over Germany travel to the Alzey Winzerfest.

Every year from the third Friday in September until the following Tuesday the old town of Alzey is transformed into a colourful place of celebration. The wine and sparkling wine terrace is of course the centre of the spectacle. Here all winegrowers from the region present their wines and other products. Musicians, bands and individual artists provide entertainment so that you will never get bored.

On the feast Saturday the Scheuplakette of the wine culture price of the city Alzey is lent. A prize that is awarded to particularly dedicated people of wine culture.
